Here comes the Indian Premier League for an 18th time! Some love it, some hate it, but make no mistake about it, the IPL is the premier T20 franchise tournament in the world and attracts many of the biggest names.
Ten teams, 74 fixtures, more award presentations than you could ever dream of at the end of each game and over two months of non-stop action, the IPL is something which is very hard for cricket fans to ignore, irrespective of where they are.
Cricketers from England have had contrasting fortunes at the tournament since it launched in 2008 and ahead of the 2025 edition, we run the rule over the ten English players who will be on the pitch this year.
Who is where?
Of the ten IPL sides, four have no English representation. Delhi Capitals, who had signed Harry Brook before he pulled out of the tournament for the second successive season, Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are all going into this campaign without any England players.
And judging by the performance of England’s Men at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where they failed to get out of the group stage, can anyone blame them?
Or maybe, those four sides have got it all wrong and it is Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru who will reap the benefits!
Chennai Super Kings
Sam Curran, Jamie Overton
At the age of 26, Sam Curran has already enjoyed five previous IPL campaigns, representing Punjab Kings in 2019, 2023 and 2024 with two seasons at CSK in between. The all-rounder returns to the yellow of Chennai for this year and will be looking to build on his most successful wicket-taking season in 2024 when he picked up 16 dismissals at a strike-rate of 15.3
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Wickets | Average | Strike-rate |
883 | 25.22 | 136.47 | 58 | 32.75 | 20.3 |
Jamie Overton is lumbering up for his maiden IPL experience but the 30 year old is no rookie in this format with 162 T20 appearances behind him.
Officially a bowling all-rounder, the Devon-born player will arrive in India looking to make an impact with his height and pace with the ball as well as with some big-hitting late in the innings.
T20 Wickets | Average | Strike-rate | Runs | Average | Strike-rate |
118 | 26.94 | 17.8 | 1586 | 20.86 | 157.65 |
Gujarat Titans
Jos Buttler
After giving up the England white-ball captaincy at the end of their miserable 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign, the right-handed keeper-batter will be looking forward to focusing purely on his individual performance at the IPL.
With 107 previous appearances in the tournament, and the only previous English player to win the Orange Cap, Buttler will be representing Gujarat Titans in 2025 after appearing for Rajasthan Royals from 2018-2024 and Mumbai Indians in 2016 and 2017.
He also represents good value in the betting markets, beginning the tournament as the eighth-favourite at 14/1 to finish as the top batter.
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate |

Kolkata Knight Riders
Moeen Ali
Another veteran of the IPL, the former England international all-rounder has played 67 times in the competition with CSK and RCB but will be turning out for KKR in 2025!
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Wickets | Average | Strike-rate |
1162 | 22.78 | 141.53 | 35 | 25.51 | 21.6 |
Mumbai Indians
Will Jacks, Reece Topley
It was a debut year for Will Jacks at the IPL in 2024 but he announced himself with a bang hitting 100 not out from only 41 balls in RCB’s win over Gujarat Titans. This season he will be playing under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy at Mumbai Indians who are the pre-season favourites for the title.
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Wickets | Average | Strike-rate |
230 | 32.85 | 175.57 | 2 | 50.00 | 27.0 |
Another player making the journey from RCB to Mumbai Indians is the tall left-arm pace bowler Reece Topley. He clocked up only five appearances across 2023 and 2024 combined for RCB with untimely injuries once again preventing him from showing off his unquestionable talents.
A groin injury sustained in the Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year saw reports emerge that he could miss out on this edition of the IPL but he has announced himself in full fitness and will be raring to go for his new franchise.

Rajasthan Royals
Jofra Archer
Plenty of column inches have been taken up talking about Jofra Archer’s injury problems during the first half of this decade and we don’t need to repeat them, but he remains one of the most in-demand pace bowlers in world cricket.
After playing for Mumbai Indians in 2023, he returns to Rajasthan Royals where he made his name from 2018 to 2021 and batters facing him in 2025 can be assured that he has lost none of the pace that has made him so dangerous across previous IPL campaigns.
The joint-favourites to be the top bowler in this IPL are both spinners, Rashid Khan and Varun Chakravarthy, but it was a pacer who won the Purple Cap in 2024 and Archer can be backed at 20/1 to be wearing the headwear at the end of the 2025 season.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell
Three England players will be rubbing shoulders with Virat Kohli at RCB this year and all of them have points to prove.
At 31 years of age and after 39 IPL appearances, some are getting impatient when it comes to Liam Livingstone. A potential candidate to take over one of England’s white-ball captaincy roles, the batting all-rounder is 61 runs shy of bringing up 1000 IPL runs.
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Wickets | Average | Strike-rate |
939 | 28.45 | 162.45 | 11 | 35.72 | 23.4 |
Phil Salt walks with a swagger and looks to hit every ball to the boundary. It’s a simple and uncomplicated approach which has seen him post highest scores of 80+ in both of his IPL seasons. He is another player who has been mentioned as a potential international captain and some big numbers for RCB will only boost his chances.
IPL Runs | Average | Strike-rate |
653 | 34.36 | 175.53 |
An injury ahead of the Champions Trophy saw Jacob Bethell ruled out of England’s squad and as a result the team looked particularly unbalanced! One of the cleanest hitters of a cricket ball in world cricket, the 21 year old will be relishing his first opportunity to show his talents at the IPL.
T20 Runs | Average | Strike-rate | Wickets | Average | Strike-rate |
1127 | 24.50 | 136.77 | 11 | 26.90 | 21.0 |
Big names missing
Jonny Bairstow struck 445 runs at an average of 55.62 in his first season of the IPL in 2019 and returned to the tournament in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024. However, his stock has fallen over the last 18 months and he went unsold ahead of this season’s auction.
Plenty has been made of England’s trials at the Champions Trophy but Ben Duckett and Joe Root actually came out of the tournament with credit and both finished in the top four highest run scorers! If some international batters drop out of some teams, it will be interesting to see if either of these in-form players get the call.
