IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans

The Gujurat Titans are one of the IPL’s newest franchises having first competed in the IPL back in 2022. Despite being one of the league’s new boys alongside the Lucknow Super Giants, the Titans wasted no time and memorably stormed to victory in their debut season.

A year later, the Titans almost kept their winning streak alive when they reached the final of IPL 2023 only to fall in the final to the Chennai Super Kings.

Starting last year with major hopes of reaching a third final in succession, the Titans fell back to earth and for the first time since joining the league could only muster up an eighth place finish and the team missed out on the playoffs for the very first time.

With a strong looking side, the Titans will hope to return back to the familiar settings of the Playoffs and look well placed to achieve that goal.

Ahead of what could be an exciting year, here is everything you need to know about the 2025 Gujarat Titans.

Who are the Gujarat Titans?

With the IPL looking to expand from its original eight team structure, the BCCI decided that for the 2022 version of the tournament, the number of participating teams would rise from eight to ten and the Gujarat Titans were formed.

Hardik Pandya was the star of the show when the Titans tasted victory back in 2022 but as is the nature of the IPL, Pandya now plies his trade for the Mumbai Indians and the team is looking to bounce back in 2025 after a relatively poor 2024 campaign.

Having failed to make the playoffs for the first time since joining the tournament, the Titans look to have one of the most experienced lineups in the IPL and will look to lean heavily on captain Shubman Gill and former IPL MVP, Joss Buttler.

Earlier this year the Titans saw a change in their ownership structure with the Torrent Group completing a 67% takeover in the team. Fans of the team will hope that under the direction of their new owners, the team returns to the glory days of the past.

Where do the Titans play?

The Gujarat Titans play their home games at the Narendra Modi Stadium which is the largest cricket stadium in the world and one of the biggest stadiums in world sport.

Able to pack 132,000 fans inside the ground, the stadium has hosted both the 2022 and 2023 IPL Finals and was also the host stadium of the 2023 World Cup Final which saw India lose a heartbreaking match to Australia.

As one of the newest stadiums within the IPL, the stadium tends to favour batsmen and the stadium has seen some of the most batter friendly IPL averages across the league.

If the Titans are wanting to return back to the business end of the tournament they will need the likes of Gill and Buttler to help lead them to victory.

Who will the Titans be playing this year?

Each of the teams in this year’s IPL will play fourteen matches in the initial league phase.

With the ten teams in the tournament being placed in two separate groups, the Titans are in Group B and will play the Mumbai Indians, the Sunrisers, Delhi Capitals and the Lucknow Super Giants twice.

From Group A they will also play the Rajasthan Royals twice, whilst they will face off against the Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings once.

With many believing that Group A is loaded, you feel that the Gujarat Titans will need to win the majority of matches that they play against their Group B opponents if they are to be competitive. Whilst they have plenty of good players, you feel they will need to be at their best to beat this level of competition.

Who are the stars of the Gujarat Titans?

The Gujarat Titans boast two of the best batsmen in the T20 game in the form of Joss Buttler and Shubman Gill.

Buttler is one of the most destructive batters in the history of T20 and was named as the MVP of the league in 2022 and was the competition’s leading scorer in 2023.

Having been a driving force behind England winning their first ever World Cup in 2019 and then the T20 World Cup in 2022, Buttler looks to be searching to find his best form. With England falling behind the rest of the game’s heavyweight nations when it comes to white ball cricket, Buttler’s form has been scratchy and his lack of runs saw him recently step down as England’s white ball captain.

Buttler has shown time and time again that he is at home on the pitches of the IPL and he will hope that this season’s IPL helps bring out his best game.

The man to replace Buttler as the competition’s leading scorer in 2024 was Shubman Gill and he will want to pick up where he left off last season. The captain of the team, Gill has been an ever present for the Titans and will want to make his class felt at the top of the innings.

One of the main reasons as to why the Titans suffered last season was their inability to make big runs in the powerplay but with Gill now accompanied by the power of Buttler, they will hope to flip that narrative on its head this time around.

Whereas Buttler and Gill will be expected to lead the way when it comes to run scoring, with the ball much of the emphasis will fall on Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj.

Khan has been one of the best spin bowlers in IPL history but at times can be a little expensive, he will need to make sure his length is dialled in if he is to have the impact that he knows he can.

Rabada can be explosive when at his best and on a surface where the batsmen are favoured he will need to show exactly why he is one of the best white ball bowlers in the world.

What do the bookmakers say, and what is our verdict?

After last season the Gujarat Titans are currently seen as one of the outsiders for victory but that could all change quickly.

Shubman Gill is a class act and is usually as consistent as they come, however with a lack of depth in their batting lineup he will need to be as brilliant as he was last year in order to ensure that the Titans can be competitive against some of the best teams in the league.

The one thing that the Titans are not short of is X-factor players and Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan can all be match winners on their day. If all three can fire at the same time, they will be more than a matchup for anyone, however if they can’t produce their best on a consistent basis the Titans could have a tough time in reaching the Playoff phase of the tournament.
